Hotel History ~

Built in the 1880’s, Barncastle was the first of Blue Hill’s grand summer cottages. Known also as the Kline Cottage and Ideal Lodge, the sprawling home was designed by Boston Architect George Clough for Virgil & Effie Kline, she the eccentric manager of the Boston Ideal Opera Company. Her love of the stage is reflected in this highly theatrical home. Barncastle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now operated as a Hotel and Restaurant, still welcoming summer visitors to Blue Hill more than 120 years later.
